What size mobile chicken coop do you need? A guide from 50 to 1,150 birds

Start with the flock you're planning, not the flock you've got

Most people size for today. The better approach is to size for where the operation is headed over the next season or two — flocks tend to grow faster than infrastructure budgets. That said, don't jump two sizes ahead. A half-empty trailer is still a full-size trailer to tow, and stepping up through the range as you grow is the way to go.

Under 100 birds: backyard and hobby setups

The CT50 suits a backyard flock of up to 50 birds and moves by hand or behind a standard vehicle — no tractor, no fuss. Solar-powered automatic doors and lighting mean the routine runs itself; you move the trailer, the birds do the rest.

At up to 100 birds, the CT100 is the popular hobby-farm choice. It shifts with a standard farm vehicle and pairs well with the 1 tonne feeder trailer — a tonne of weather-protected feed cuts refill trips right down, which matters more than you'd think once the flock passes 50.

100 to 250 birds: stepping into commercial

The CT250 is where pasture-raised egg production gets serious. It's built heavier, runs a bigger solar system and includes an isolated egg-collection room. You'll want a 4WD or tractor to move it, and this is the point where feed and water become part of the system rather than a daily chore — a 1 tonne feeder trailer and an IBC water trailer move around the paddocks with the birds.

250 to 1,150 birds: full-scale pastured production

The CT550, CT850 and CT1150 cover mid to large commercial flocks — 550, 850 and 1,150 birds respectively. All three run 200W solar systems and are built on heavy-duty galvanised steel chassis designed for constant relocation. From the CT850 up, pair with the 1.5 tonne feeder trailer, which feeds up to 700 birds between refills. You'll need a large tractor or 4WD to shift the big trailers — plan the rotation around that.

The towing question people miss

Match the trailer to what you already own. Moved by hand or standard vehicle: CT50 and CT100. 4WD or tractor: CT250 and up. Large tractor: CT850 and CT1150. The fastest way to break a rotation is infrastructure you can't move in half an hour — if the gear you're looking at needs machinery you don't have, size down or budget for the tow vehicle as part of the setup.

A coop is a third of the system

Housing gets the attention, but a mobile pasture setup is three things moving together: housing, feed and water. The feeder trailers carry 1 or 1.5 tonnes with weather verandas and adjustable flow gates; the IBC trailer carts 1,000L of water to wherever the birds are; an electric fence kit keeps the flock where the rotation needs them. Sizing the coop without sizing the rest is how setups end up with daily bucket runs.
